Last Tuesday walking home from In Balance in the freezing rain I slipped and hit the back of my head on a sidewalk. I couldn’t see for about 30 seconds, was extremely dizzy and felt nauseated immediately. Luckily my GP has an after hours clinic on week nights, so I went to get checked out. After a thorough exam it was determined that I had a minor concussion. I was advised to take a few days off work, majorly limit screen time, reading, loud noises, movement and to rest in bed until the immediate symptoms passed. For two days I was extremely dizzy, nauseated and was having trouble focusing my eyes. On Thursday a friend came by my house and did a cranialsacral treatment for me, which helped relieve muscle pain and pressure in my head. On Friday I saw my co-worker Tracey Crocker (Acupuncturist & Herbalist) for a quick acupuncture treatment. Tracey used 7 acupuncture points and mixed up an herbal formula for me to drink.
While resting on the table during the acupuncture treatment the pressure and pain in my head began to ease, and my thinking became less foggy. I took my first does of herbs shortly after and within a few hours noticed a dramatic difference- my eyes were able to focus, I was far less dizzy, the pressure and pain were drastically reduced and my thinking was much clearer. I took 5 grams of the herbs in water twice a day for 5 days. The first 3 days the symptoms crept back between doses, but for the last 2 days the symptoms have not returned. I’m still easily tired and can’t imagine spending hours watching tv or reading, and exercise more intense than walking is out of the question, but I am leaps and bounds ahead of where I would have been without the herbs and acupuncture.
I have successfully treated many patients with concussion, both fresh and post-concussive syndrome using acupuncture, but I had never had a concussion myself. Experiencing a concussion and the frustration of not being able to do anything has given me a renewed appreciation for what my patients are going through, and a renewed awe in the power of Chinese medicine. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have been part of my life for 10 years now and still have the power to amaze me.
